About Bulldogs

Today's Bulldog is very different than his ancestor. The Bulldog owes his origins to medieval times when the animals were bred for the barbaric sport of bull baiting. By the 18th century the sport had become outlawed.

With the purpose for the breed abolished, it should have died out. But there remained bulldog loyalists that kept the breed going. The ferocity was bred out of the bulldog. It became symbolic with trust, loyalty and courage. The modern bulldog bears little resemblance in both physique and demeanor to its ancestor.

Bulldog Facts

Bulldogs require greater care than most breeds. Make sure you're prepared and fully informed for what's involved in taking on this responsibility. Many novice owners fall in love with the breed, but are not prepared for the extra TLC these dogs need.

Don't make the mistake of getting your dog from anyone other than a reputable breeder. Saving a few dollars up front may cost you much more than that in vet bills and heartache. Bulldogs are easily susceptible to heatstroke - much more so than their canine brethren. In spite of his stocky build and solid countenance, the bulldog can be quite fragile in this regard.

A bulldog is not going to be a hiking or jogging companion. Get used to the idea that if you get a bulldog, you're getting a couch potato. Yes, you're companion will be there to nap beside you. Your bulldog will require a cool place in the warmer months. He isn't made for long strenuous walks. Exercise is not in his vocabulary. The bulldog has a mind of his own. He'll be your best friend, but he'll do it in his own manner, when he's good and ready. You'll never find a finer, more loyal companion.
